A little piece of complicated history

Today I found these two pictures of Leipzig, my German hometown, in 1942. It is a little eerie looking at these pictures and knowing that just one year later these same houses would collapse in the (rightfully so) bombing of the allies and bury my great grandmother forever and my (with my mom pregnant) grandmother temporarily, until my himself bleeding grandfather dug her out of the dirt, unconscious. They were bombed out three times in three different bombings and lost everything they had (including their parents). Wars are just horrible. I can't even begin to understand the Russian casualties (23 million people), which makes the American losses of 418,500 people pale by comparison. Here are the casualties by country: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_casualties Why can't people just stop killing each other, isn't history a lesson horrible enough?
