Home, (not quite) Home on the Range...

We had our first drops of rain yesterday coming into Calgary. Calgary has been, um, interesting for us so far. We found a place to stay thanks to our non-resident Calgary expert, Mary (pictured elsewhere on the blog), but it seems wherever we try to go, we end up having to make at least 5 increasingly smaller concentric circles in order to find our destination. Last night, during one of these circles, we made a U-turn and were immediately pulled over by the lovely Calgary police. Actually they were lovely, and luckily we have an Arizona license plate and can play stupid tourist. but in calgary do not make a U-turn at an intersection with lights. especially in front of police. there won't be a no u-turn sign. also especially when your car's registration is expired and you try to explain that you got a 30 day extension and the nice Calgary cop has no idea what you are talking about because she didn't even look at your license plate past the Arizona part. Luckily she didnt even ask for drivers liscences cause we couldn't find Peg's at that moment!

but alas, today will be better, the sun is already shining brightly through the overcast sky. While driving through the prairies yesterday Peg commented, "Its like God's golf course." I think I heard a good joke like that once, but I won't repeat it here.

We looked at a larger map yesterday, and it turns out we're already west of Denver! Almost as far west as Phoenix. Crazy. Time flies when you're having fun. Peg determined we will be travelling a protractor circle around Salt Lake City from here on out.

We may see my lovely Uncle John tonight, which is wonderful and in a way makes the drive seem futile. Why didn't someone tell us we could FLY???
We continue to have a great time though. Anyone have any idea what the white stuff in that picture is? It sort of smells like Sulfur, and looks like Salt.
Au Revoir till Banff, Kananaskis, or maybe still Calgary.

P.S. that large teepee is the weird Canadian Places book site of the day. Originally used in the Calgary olympics, it was moved to Medicine Hat. We almost visited the tunnels of Moose Jaw, where Al Capone escaped through, and Chinese Coolies hid from the police. You can go on a tour where you pretend to be a chinese immigrant and "experience turn of the century racism at its finest."
